A Distinct Concept of Wellness
67A human mind is powerful. It is so powerful that it has a direct link to our physical wellness.
Physical wellness pertains to a sound physical condition. Most often than not, it is associated with healthy foods and exercise. But do you know that our state of mind has a direct influence in our physical wellness?
A human mind is powerful. It is so powerful that it has a direct link to our physical wellness. For instance: In a cut throat competition, we aim for perfection. Actually, aiming high is a notable trait. It is a frame of mind directed towards excellence. However, a person who looks for even the smallest imperfections is easily susceptible to chronic stress. We do not need an expert to know that chronic stress leads to health issues.
I can name one disastrous effect of chronic stress. It can result to shrinkage of hippocampus, a cell in our brain that is responsible for memory retention. Just imagine having a challenge with memory retention. There are other negative effects of stress. Hence, it would be best to address stress before it gets to you.
One way to manage stress is positive thinking. A positive state of mind helps a person see a stressful event as an opportunity to attain success. This saves us from the health issues associated with stress.
Having said this, our state of mind and our perception about the events in our lives have an important effect in our physical well being. This theory has been in existent since 19th century. However, behavioral experts connoted that this theory is most effective for people who are in the high level of our society. It is said that the concept of positive perception having a direct connection to the well being can not be applied to those who are on the poverty level. The reason behind such theory is the fact that those on the poverty level are most often challenged with the basic necessities in life.
Theoretically speaking, it is more difficult for those who are on the poverty level of the society to achieve a positive perception towards the conditions of their lives. The main challenge goes with the fact that they are always faced with difficulties regarding food source and place to sleep.
More so, people who are under nourished can not function effectively. They do not have the proper nutrients to help them achieve their fullest potentials. Therefore, would be likely deprived of physical wellness.
With the theory raised, is it factual to conclude that wellness is exclusive for the fortunate few? Some may say yes and some may say no. However you may see said theory, it is also factual to inject that determination to survive is also a state of mind and therefore, could be a perception as well.
After all, we could never discount the power of a human being to survive despite impossible odds. And with this, physical wellness may not necessarily depend on a persons’ economic standing alone, but with the will of his spirit to survive.

I totally agree with the mind-body connection and have practiced that for many years. We are what we think about. Stress reduction is vital to a healthy life just like proper nutrition.
I respectfully disagree with the theory that those in poverty can't attain the goal - I have been around many people who lacked material wealth and still felt joy. In fact, people who live frugally tend to appreciate what they have more many times. Not always, but many times - so I think it's a bit presumptuous of anyone to assume that high levels of well-being cannot be attained by those in poverty.
I understand it's more difficult to meet one's basic needs, but I also have seen "rich" people who work ridiculously long hours at jobs they don't love just to have the "stuff" to compete with the Jones' and I can't think that leads to well-being either.
I think it all is directly tied to one's character and state of mind :)
